Rowing is not just for the young in body! The Boat Club provides the opportunity for the more 'mature' in age (if not in mind!) of the Friends' community to experience just what it is that captivates the children and turns family life upside down! The Masters Rowing Group caters for everyone: those who just want to have a try, those who want to row regularly for recreation and those who suffer withdrawal symptoms if they're not frequently on the water training or competing. At present there are several training times during the week - some early mornings, an evening and a weekend time slot - these are mainly outside the busy rowing times for school use. The training times will also vary depending on the regattas. There are about 20 Masters rowers - old scholars, past parents and current parents. Masters rowing can take you onto the beautiful waters of the Derwent, to rowing venues around Tasmania, elsewhere in Australia and even the world. Back in 2005 a group of Friends' Masters competed at the World Masters in Edmonton, Canada. In 2009 the World Masters Games will be back in Australia. The Masters love their rowing and generally compete in all the club pennant and masters regattas within Tasmania - including the 9km long distance eight race at New Norfolk. Perhaps one of the legendary moments was when, being steered by a young coxwain, the Friends' Masters eight at Lake Barrington left lane three to eventually be outside the course before re-entering the course back to lane three and then going on to win the race!!! The Tasmanian Rowing Council suggested that if we could do that every regatta, they would be able to sell tickets to rowing regattas. The Masters are very active within the Boat Club contributing support in areas such as coaching, administration and maintenance.
